EKITI TUC CHAIRMAN DR FAROTIMI SEEKS POLICIES TO CREATE SAFE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS

… commemorates 16 days of activism

The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ekiti State, Comrade Dr. Omotola Farotimi has called for a collective action by government, civil society organisations and relevant stakeholders to create a safe online environment for women and girls.

In a statement in Ado Ekiti to commemorate this year’s sixteen days of Activism, Comrade Dr. Farotimi stressed the need for government at all levels to come up with strategic policies that would address social media violence against women and girls.

The chairman highlighted the growing concern of cyber harassment and abuse targeting women and girls, which she said hampers their participation in national development, politics and other social activities.

Dr. Farotimi promised the readiness of the Trade Union Congress under her watch to give better opportunities to women and empower them so as to be able to harness their potential without fear of intimidation and harassment.

She said, women are vulnerable citizens, they deserve to be protected, gone are the days when women were relegated to the background and no one was talking, It’s a modern world, women should be allowed to express their rights freely.

We are worried about how women suffer abuse on social media thereby forcing some of them to depression and anxiety, saying such devilish practice has to stop, offenders of such acts should be punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

She went further to say that Nigerian women love and honour their husbands but object to violence against them either physically or on social media.
Women are great, no controversy.
