EKITI NDLEA CREATES PUBLIC AWARENESS AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

…laments high rate of youths involvement in drugs, advocates proper parenting

The Ekiti State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr Aina Sunday Rufus has urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their wards and guide them against abuse of illicit substances.

Commander Rufus disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking to Roundoff news crew at the rally organize to commemorate the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

He said a lot of youths are involved in the abuse of illicit substances which had enhace criminal activities in the society.

According to him, most crimes committed are influenced by drugs hence parents must keep a close watch on their children to guide them against drug.

He said proper parenting goes a long way in shaping and keeping them off peer pressures which could turned them into drug syndicates.

The NDLEA boss noted that this year’s theme “The Evidence Is Clear: Invest In Prevention” means that it is obvious to everyone the effect of drugs on the lives of its users and the society at large, therefore, parents and guardians should invest in prevention by ensuring they monitor their children and know what they are up to at every moment.

The Commander however assured the people of Ekiti state that he and his team would ensure a drug free environment for them.

He noted that some of his achievements since he assumed office in February 2024 includes recovery of about 215 kilograms of cannabis sativa at Ijesha-Isu and destruction of about half ton of harvested cannabis at Ora-Ekiti.

Others include interception of about 1350 kilogram of Indian hemp at Ifaki abandoned seizure, raiding and arresting of about 15 drug dealers and users at Ati-kon kon, raiding of cannabis farm at Ise forest where about 7.8hectares of cannabis farm land was destroyed amongst others.
