
…Moves to curtail quackery in health sector.
Applauds Governor Oyebanji’s implementation of its resolutions.
The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, has directed the Committee on Rules and Business, with two co-opted lawmakers, to commence work on the harmonised rules and standing orders for the House, as resolved at the Conference of Speakers held in Lagos last week.
Aribasoye explained at plenary on Tuesday that the harmonised rules would ensure uniformity and compatibility in operations, while areas peculiar to each state would be allowed for application in affected areas.
Presenting the report of the meeting of the Conference of Speakers across the 36 state assemblies, the Majority Leader of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Tolu Ige, intimated the lawmakers with the outcome of the conference on how to adopt a unified standing order for the thirty-six state houses of assembly in Nigeria.
The Ekiti Quality of Care Bill 2025 was also debated on the floor of the House.
Speaking on the bill, Hon. Babatunde Oke, Abimbola Solanke, Ayodeji Adegbite, and Yomi Ayorinde, Iyabo Fakunle-Okieimen highlighted the importance of the bill as a veritable way of curbing the activities of quacks, discouraging wrong drug prescriptions, and ascertaining the eligibility and competency of personnel in clinics and hospitals.
In their submissions, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bolaji Olagbaju, and the former Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hakeem Jamiu, emphasized the need for adequate monitoring of the activities of illegal owners of private clinics and hospitals, recommending stringent sanctions against quacks and the shutting down of illegal health facilities.
The Speaker, Aribasoye, led other members to commend the Governor Biodun Oyebanji administration for his unwavering compliance with the resolutions of the House.
The commendation, which was adopted as a result of the observation raised by the lawmaker representing Oye Constituency 1, Hon. Tope Longe, stated that Governor Oyebanji deserved applause for implementing the resolution of the House, particularly in respect of Adire Ekiti, which was discussed on the floor of the House on 24th September 2024.
Aribasoye described the gesture of the Governor as laudable and a testament to the mutual respect for the House and the Executive-Legislature harmony manifesting in the state. He promised that the lawmakers would give their maximum support to the administration.
Also, under the matters of urgent public importance, the lawmaker representing Ido/Osi Constituency 1, Hon. Abiodun Fawekun, called the attention of the House to the scarcity of water in Ido/Osi Local Government.
Similarly, the lawmaker representing Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency 2, Rt. Hon. Hakeem Jamiu, informed the House about a recent fire disaster that occurred in one of the primary schools in Igbemo Ekiti due to a thunderstorm, which destroyed the school building and other valuable properties.
Meanwhile, the Speaker has directed the lawmakers from Ilejemeje, Moba, and Ido/Osi to write a request letter to the Governor and other relevant agencies for water provision in the area. He also empathised with the people of Igbemo and called on SUBEB authorities for a quick response to the challenge.
At the plenary, the House also passed into law the Ekiti State Water Resources, Sanitation, and Hygiene Sector Bill 2025, while the Ekiti State Employment Trust Funds Bill was committed to the Committee on Health and Human Services and the House Committee on Investment, respectively.
Analysing the Employment Trust Fund Bill, Hon. Alhaja Maryam Ogunlade, Teju Okuyiga, and Femi Fatunla described the bill as a life-impacting one, which would improve the economy, support skill acquisition for youths, and address the unemployment problem confronting youths in the state.
