…urges engineers to develop skills in designs and production

An Academic and Mechanical Engineer at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Engr. Dr. Abayomi Olorunnishola has called on the Federal Government to appoint more creative engineers and involve them actively in it’s economic Plannings.
According to Dr. Olorunnishola, Mechanical Engineers play an important role in the economic growth of any society if well utilized.
Engr. Olorunnishola stated this at the 26th Professor E. K Obiakor Lecture Series at the Conference Hall of the Polytechnic, on Thursday, titled “Achieving Sustainable Development: The Role of Mechanical Engineers.”
Dr. Olorunnishola who is a Chief Lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, noted that Mechanical Engineers are professionals and technocrats who could use their skills and expertise to assist the country to solve it’s major challenges.
He said: “Engineers have to produce. They should be involved in both production and financial planning by actively participating in national planning for sustainable development.
“Once they have had a taste of innovation, they will be more interested and enthusiastic about technology and stimulating the economy. To continue on the path of sustainable development, engineers must remain vigilant, innovative and creative.
“The mechanical engineering curriculum needs to be refreshed and updated to give future engineers and innovative perspective. You must be inspired to innovate and create.
“Engineering students must learn the basics of engineering, the application of the basic knowledge, how to become creative or innovative, how to manage sustainable development and how to plan for sustainable development.”
Similarly, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Dayo Hephzibah, said the relevance and role of Mechanical Engineers cannot be over-emphasized noting that government should capitalise on their ingenious expertise for the growth of the nation.
He said: “Polytechnics are not pushover in the academic. As a nation we have a lot to do. We need to put the round pegs in round holes. We have the Engineers who can turn this country around. The Nigerian Society of Engineers should be on its toes.”
