DON IDENTIFIES IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY ON REDUCTION OF ROAD CRASHES, LOCK JAM

…as Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara Special Marshals hold Conference on Traffic Management

The use of technology in road traffic management has been identified as one of the major strategies to reduce crashes and lock jam on Nigerian roads.

A former coordinator, Road Safety Special Marshal, Ekiti State, Professor J. A Adegboyega stated this in Ado Ekiti during a special conference organised by Federal Road Safety Corps, Special Marshals for Kwara, Ekiti and Kogi Commands.

Professor Adegboyega explained that automated traffic enforcement systems, such as red camera light and speed camera have effectively reduced traffic violations compared to traditional methods like manual patrol, saying the system can capture violators even if the officers are not around.

The Don mentioned other devices to include Advance Driver system, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Monitoring system, Intelligent Speed Adaptation, in- Vehicle-Camera, Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication and smartphone app.

Professor Adegboyega, who spoke on the theme of the conference “Leveraging Technology For Improved Traffic Management and Enforcement: The FRSC Digital Approach” urged government to embrace such technologies to check violation of traffic rules and arrest offenders.

Declaring the conference open, the Vice Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Professor Babatola Ayodele commended the role of FRSC on the road to ensure safety of life and property.

According to him, Government has not made a mistake of establishing special marshal in ensuring free flow of vehicular movement on the major road and highways.

He noted that the theme of the programme is coming up at the right time where every sector needed technology to do things in dynamic ways to make life meaningful for Nigerians.

The VC promised that the University would not relent in its oars in contributing to society development and appreciated Governor Biodun Oyebanji for creating enabling environment for management of the university to strive.

In a remark, the zonal Commanding Officer, Road Safety Headquarters Ilorin, Assistant Chief Marshal Chichebem Onukwubiri noted that road safety is a duty of everybody, urging people to support special marshal in ensuring that there is minimal crashes on roads.

Speaking on the theme of the conference, ACM Onukwubiri said it was very apt and inline with one of the policies of the current Corps Management which harps on Digital transformation.

He commended Ekiti State Special Marshals contributions in the area of recruitment of special marshals, purchased of special marshal vehicle, sponsoring re-paint of the state FRSC Office, donation of tyres for the command, among others.

Also, Zonal Coordinator, Special Road Safety 8.0, Chief Jaiyeola Omotosho who spoke through Ekiti State Coordinator, Dr Adebayo Olumuyiwa said the programme was put in place to enlighten members of the Corps Marshal on the need for them not to relent in their services for humanity.

The programme witnessed decoration of the Chairman of motor Dealers Association, Ekiti State, Ibrahim Adeniyi Bankole known as ADEBANK motor and a cleric.
