Challenges of Living Abroad, Actor Femi Brainard Opens Up About Struggles

Nigerian actor Femi Brainard has shared candid insights into his decision to relocate abroad and the unexpected challenges he faced.

He made this known during an interview with Teju Oyelakin, also known as Teju Babyface, on a podcast, revealing the realities of being a Nigerian celebrity living abroad.

He highlighted both the advantages and disadvantages of the move, stressing that while being esteemed and respected in Nigeria has its perks, anonymity abroad can pose significant challenges.

During the conversation with the comedian, Brainard recounted instances where Nigerian passengers, recognizing him from his acting career, expressed disbelief and approached him during his Uber driving duties.

He described moments of financial struggle, including one poignant occasion where he found himself overwhelmed with emotion in a parking lot, contemplating the hardships of providing for his family.

“At times it would be so hard, I no go get Money for hand,” Brainard admitted, reflecting on the difficulties he faced. “Yankee no know star o… I had to feed my family.” He said.

Despite the allure of living abroad, Brainard confessed that the experience has been far from glamorous.

“As difficult as Nigeria seems to be, I would rather be a prince and a celebrity in a system that is not working than come to this place and be a nobody,” he expressed, grappling with the challenge of maintaining financial stability, particularly concerning rent payments.

Brainard’s candid account sheds light on the complex realities faced by Nigerian celebrities navigating life abroad, offering a glimpse into the sacrifices and struggles behind the glamour of fame.
