Billionaire Kidnapper: Lagos Government to Re-arraign Evans for Alleged Murder

Osamagbe Imadiyi

The Lagos State government will re-arraign Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, the convicted billionaire kidnap kingpin, before state High Court Justice Adenike Coker today on a five-count amended charge that includes attempted murder, murder, and kidnapping conspiracy.

Evans’ absence on Wednesday caused a suit brought against him by a kidnap victim to be put on hold. Evans was previously found guilty and imprisoned by two Lagos courts. He is currently facing numerous charges of kidnapping and armed robbery. Hakeem Oshodi, a judge in the Ikeja High Court, sentenced him to life in prison in February 2022 for the abduction of Chief Donatus Dunu, the CEO of Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Evans was sentenced to 21 years in prison in September 2022 by another court judge, Oluwatoyin Taiwo, who is now retired, for kidnapping Chief Sylvanus Ahamonu, a businessman, and demanding $420,000 in ransom from his family. In two additional kidnapping cases, Evans is still awaiting trial. A setback to the trial occurred on October 10, 2024, when Evans’ attorney failed to appear in court. Evans had previously told the court that he had applied for a plea deal, which suggests that he may enter a guilty plea to the amended charges.
