ASUU STRIKE: Branches Halt Work Nationwide Over Unpaid June Salaries

Branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) across Nigeria have begun suspending academic activities in response to the Federal Government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries, triggering the union’s “No Pay, No Work” policy.

ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, had earlier warned that the union would enforce the policy should salary disbursement be delayed beyond the third day of the new month. As of now, lecturers across multiple universities remain unpaid.

At the University of Jos, ASUU Chairman Dr. Jurbe Molwus confirmed that lecturers have withdrawn from all academic and statutory engagements, following the National Executive Council’s resolution. A monitoring team has been mobilized to ensure full compliance.

Similarly, at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi, lecturers stayed off-campus in response to a directive from the local ASUU branch. Its chairman, Dr. Angulu Haruna, accused the government of deliberate neglect, noting that other federal workers had been paid.

The University of Abuja also saw minimal academic activity, while lecturers at Ahmadu Bello University reportedly complied with the directive by staying away from work.

In solidarity, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) issued a statement warning it may also embark on strike if the government fails to pay outstanding salaries.

Union leaders insist the consistent delay—allegedly due to migration from the IPPIS payment platform—signals unfair treatment of academic institutions.
