The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) Ekiti State University branch says it will comply fully with the nationwide strike that has just been rolled over for the next twelve weeks from 8th May 2022.
This formed part of the resolutions of the union during a special Executive meeting held in Ado Ekiti where the current strike action was discussed.
The lecturers were reacting to a statement by the university Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun during a meeting with the committee of Deans where he directed, that all academic staff should resume academic activities.
In a statement in Ado Ekiti, EKSU ASUU Chairman, Dr Kayode Arogundade and the Secretary, Dr O.D Ogunwale urged members of the union to disregard the Vice chancellor’s directive.
Dr Arogundade said the announcement for the re-opening of the University was purely politically motivated but would not stand.
He said Executive Members of the union have been receiving threat messages from various agents and the University management but said no retreat no surrender until the needful were done.
The statement reads “The general public is hereby notified and put on alert to the threats, that if any harm is inflicted on any member of the ASUU-EKSU Executives, management should be held responsible.
Dr Arogunde and Dr Ogundele urged Parents to monitor the movement of their wards in order not to be used as thugs in the coming election.
Accordingto them, “One wonders why the administration in Ekiti State on its way to Golgotha is now keen on school resumption only to put the life of our students at risk, he said
” The students themselves should be aware of the insincerity of those parading themselves as their leaders whose only interest is their temporary benefit from whichever government is in power.
He explained that the union was equally aware of the antics of insignificant lecturers playing Political harlotry with the destiny of the majority of members, noting that they would be brought to book soonest.
EKSU ASUU chairman therefore directed all members of the union to stay off their duty post as the current strike action is comprehensive and total.
He said members should be on the lookout for further directives.
