Manchester United defeated Southampton, a Premier League basement team, 3-1 on Thursday thanks to a spectacular 12-minute hat-trick from Amad Diallo. Before the forward turned the tide of the match at a boisterous Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim’s team appeared headed for a fourth consecutive league loss at home. Before putting United ahead eight minutes later and finishing in style with a third goal deep into stoppage time, he tied the score in the 82nd minute.

It was unfortunate for a Saints team that was trying to avoid becoming the worst team in Premier League history at the end of the season. Manuel Ugarte’s own goal at the end of the first half had given Ivan Juric’s team a well-earned lead, and they had multiple opportunities to increase it.

After a fierce 2-2 draw at league leaders Liverpool, United won the FA Cup on Sunday, boosting their spirits at Arsenal.

After a clumsy corner by the United defense in the 43rd minute, the visitors scored the goal they so richly deserved. The ball went in off Ugarte’s back after Dibling flicked on Matheus Fernandes’s delivery at the near post.

In the 82nd minute, Zirkzee passed the ball to Amad, who ran at the defense, giving United their first lead. After his first attempt was blocked, he scored a brilliant second shot that blasted past Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

He completed his hat-trick eight minutes later after receiving a cute dinked pass from Christian Eriksen, a substitute, and then exploiting a Southampton defense error.

With the victory, Southampton is 10 points clear of safety and United moves up to 12th place in the standings.
