Press Week: Ekiti NUJ Targets Over 500 for Free Medical Check-up

As part of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week activities, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. Rotimi Feyishina, has announced that no fewer than 500 individuals are expected to benefit from a free medical check-up.

He disclosed this at a press conference on Monday in Ado-Ekiti as part of activities for the 2024 Ekiti NUJ Press Week.

According to the Planning Committee, the check-up is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 8am and will be extended to the following day to ensure a broader reach and impact.

He stated that in collaboration with Maternity and Child Specialist Clinic, a medical practitioner, Dr Idowu Ade-Ojo will be available for cervical screening for women, prostrate screening for men, HIV/AIDS screening, fasting blood sugar test.

Mr. Feyishina implored the public to come early enough, likewise, materials that will serve as CSR like clothing materials neatly packaged, will be available.

The committee chairman highlighted the significance of the initiative saying: “The free medical check-up will not only take place on Tuesday but will also continue on Wednesday to accommodate more people. Our goal is to reach as many as possible.”

He emphasized that the program is aimed at enhancing the well-being of journalists, referred to as members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm. He stressed the importance of the initiative in recognizing and celebrating the safety and resilience of journalists, who have worked tirelessly over the past year in challenging and often dangerous environments.

“Our desired outcome is to have rebranded and reinvigorated members of the press, more agile and ready to commit to serving society. This event is also a moment to appreciate God for a year of safety despite the risks associated with the profession,” the chairman added.

The medical outreach is one of the highlights of the NUJ Press Week, which is designed to celebrate and support the welfare of journalists while reflecting on the important role they play in society.
