Deji Adeyanju, the lawyer for social media activist and personality Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, has lamented the difficulties he encountered in securing his client’s release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. VeryDarkMan was given administrative bail, but he was still being held until his bail terms were fulfilled, according to a statement released by the EFCC on Tuesday morning by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.
Oyewale revealed that several petitions alleging serious financial crimes had invited Otse to be questioned. Oyewale claims that VDM was arrested as a result of his repeated disregard for EFCC invitations sent to known addresses and through communication channels. He said, “The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the commission. This led to the issuance of the proper remand order. He will be released once he satisfies all the requirements of the administrative bail that has been offered. Otse has been granted administrative bail and will be released once all requirements have been met”.
In response to the EFCC’s announcement, Adeyanju posted on social media that his legal team had trouble accessing the documents that outlined VeryDarkMan’s bail requirements. He emphasized the futility of repeated attempts to obtain the documents. Oyewale addressed the events that led to VDM’s arrest in certain social media posts, emphasizing that the arrest was lawful and not a reaction to what it called “unguarded attacks” by the suspect against its social media operations. He asked the public to avoid speculating and to let it fulfill its constitutional obligations without intervention.
