Landlord Allegedly Dumps Tenant’s Body in Canal, Police Launch Manhunt

Grace Omachoko

A landlord, Bola Abiodun, and her husband, known simply as Sunday, have reportedly fled their residence in the Temidire community, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, following allegations of disposing their tenant’s body in a canal.

The incident, which occurred around 12:05 pm on May 8, 2024, prompted the state police command to initiate a search for the couple after they went missing following the purported crime.

According to an anonymous police source, the deceased tenant, identified as Iya Ibukun, was involved in a hit-and-run accident on May 5, 2024. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Ibukun refrained from seeking medical attention due to financial constraints, resorting to self-medication instead. Tragically, she passed away in her apartment a few days later.

Allegedly, the landlady and her husband removed the body from the apartment and disposed of it in a nearby canal, prompting suspicion among residents.

Mosuru Akindele, chairman of the Community Development Association, and youth leader Olabode Kazeem were notified of the incident.

Describing the sequence of events, the source noted “There was an accident; a hit-and-run driver allegedly knocked the tenant down. She didn’t go to the hospital and started treating herself at home. She died a few days after the incident. The landlady and her husband conspired to dump the body in a canal.”

State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident, stating that efforts were underway to recover the body from the canal.

“Our men combed the entire canal in search of the body, but we haven’t found anything,” she remarked.
