The Rivers State Police Command has said that two of its officers have been suspended over the alleged extortion of $3000 from two travellers in Abia State.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday by the spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the suspension and interruption of salaries of two ASPs.

Iringe-Koko clarified that the Police Service Commission had ordered their suspension and that the two will now go before the Force Disciplinary Committee, which deals with senior officer disciplinary matters.

Three employees of the Special Strategic Squad in Abuja have also been detained, looked into, and put on trial for allegedly extorting N30 million from a local named Omoh Oshoke.

Roundoffnews gathered that the two tourists were taken in Aba, the capital of Abia State, by three police officers—an Inspector and two Assistant Superintendents of Police—who then took them to Port Harcourt and demanded money from them.

Following their arrest, the two ASPs were formally questioned and had their removal recommended, while the Inspector was put through an Orderly chamber trial by the leadership and ultimately terminated.

The statement read: “This is an official update from the Rivers State Police Command on a case involving three police officers who are suspected of extortion.

“As previously communicated during our press briefing on February 13, 2024, Inspector Michael Odey was found guilty and subsequently dismissed from duty, effective from 07/02/2024, following thorough Orderly Room proceedings and a comprehensive review conducted by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16.

“Today, we hereby inform the public that the Police Service Commission has officially authorised the suspension from duty of ASP Doubara Edonyabo and ASP Talent Mungo, effective from 29/02/2024. Additionally, the salaries of the implicated officers have been stopped.

“The two officers will face the Force Disciplinary Committee, which is responsible for addressing disciplinary issues involving senior officers..
“We want to inform the public about an alleged case of armed robbery, kidnapping, and extortion carried out by certain cops against one Omoh Oshoke, an Abuja resident, in furtherance of our zero tolerance for corruption and extortion.”
