NIGERIA INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS SUGGESTS SOLUTIONS TO PREVENT FLOODING IN EKITI

…Condems indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents

Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, Ekiti State Branch has called on the state government to clear all drains and construct runoff channels, especially at Odoayo, around Bawa Estate to prevent further occurrences of flooding in the nearest future.

The Chairman of the Institution, Engineer Ayodele Ayegbusi made the call in Ado Ekiti when he led other members on inspection to ascertain the level of flooding caused by downpour in the state.

Engineer Ayegbusi explained that clearing of drainages and construction of channels to take water to bridges would give room for free flow of water during the rainy season.

According to him, the case of flooding experienced in Bawa Estate on Thursday sent some house owners parking out of their houses to avoid being swept off by flood.

During a visit to Bawa Estate in Ado Ekiti, The Chairman of the Institution observed that the flooding was caused by the blockage of the earthen channel for the discharge by an occupant who started his building on his newly acquired plot of land thereby causing the runoff in the drain to overflow its bank and accidentally discharging flood to Bawa Estate.

Engineer Ayegbusi also lamented how some residents normally dumped refuse in drainages, saying this was one of the major factors that hindred free flow of water thereby causing flooding.

He called on government to put in place strict policy that would prevent people from dumping waste on drainages and provide waste bins in some strategic locations so that residents can make use of it
