A deadly confrontation in Ayati village, located in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, has left at least 30 people dead following a violent clash between herders and local farmers.
It was reported that the confrontation began when herders, who allegedly paid money to graze their animals in the area, clashed with local farmers
The farmers, who felt endangered by the herders’ presence, sought government intervention, and in response, security troops were deployed to the region, successfully driving the herders out while destroying their temporary tents.
This action enraged the herders, who felt wronged due to their financial investment in the land.
According to reports, they reportedly aligned with local bandits, leading to a brutal retaliatory attack on the village of Ayati.
“They (herders) became angry as they claimed to have given money for the land, so they went back to the bandits. The herders joined hands with the bandits to attack the village and massacre people.” Said an anonymous
It was also gathered that the massacre had resulted in the deaths of over 30 people, with many more still missing as search efforts continue.
The full scale of the tragedy is still unfolding, as villagers and authorities work to recover the bodies of the victims.
Confirming the attack, the state police command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, stated that she was aware of the incident but was still awaiting further details from officers on the ground.
This latest attack adds to the ongoing tension in Benue State, a region frequently plagued by violent clashes between herders and local communities.
